Blanchard is Going Green!

For the last week our community has been collecting plastic bags.
At our Community Meeting on March 27th this is what we saw on the stage after the 5th grade skit about using reusable bags instead of paper or plastic.
When the cashier asks, "Paper or Plastic?"
Say "Neither, reusable"

Blanchard's Reusable Bag Challenge

It takes 21 days to start a new habit.  We are going to see which class can eliminate the use of the most plastic bags?

Join the Challenge, color two boxes every time you use your reusable bag instead of a plastic or paper bag.

Thanks to generation donations from the PTF (Parent Teachers Friends Organization), Roche Brothers, and BCT (Boxborough Conservation Trust) every student and staff member received a reusable bag to use for this challenge and beyond.

Our New Climbing Wall
Students in physical education classes can now be found "hanging out" on the new climbing wall which was recently installed in our gym and was funded by a PTF Grant.  Notice how they help and spot for each other too!

It's time for the Blanchard Art Show,

and our art is...
Art in Bloom
As you walk around the halls of Blanchard you'll see these beautiful blooms and more, as you search for fabulous artwork done by your children.

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Little green foot prints were found all over several classrooms this morning.

Whoever or whatever caused this seemed to have gotten into a lot of mischief in the Kindergarten classrooms.

Professional Day 3/7/08
Technology!!!

Teachers and Staff chose 4 out of 16 class offerings that were taught by teachers and staff who were willing to prepare and share their experiences about integrating technology into their teaching.

There were classes about how to use our COWs (Computers On Wheel), SmartBoard, Inspiration, various technology hardware, Kid Pix, TimeLiner,  troubleshooting , Microsoft Publisher, and a lot more.

There was an online workshop created by Betsy Peterson,  and a Share Fair in the Science Lab where everyone was encouraged to create a poster explaining one way they had used technology in their classroom.
It is safe to say that technology plays a huge part in education at Blanchard, but not as big of a part as those teachers who make use of it.  Technology is only one of their many tools.  Most of the teachers walked away from this full day with more tools in their Technology
Tool Box than they started the day with, and some ideas
about how to get around some roadblocks that they
might have encountered.
Boxborough Community Read-Aloud
We are a community of readers

If it's February, it must be Obstacle Course
time in the Gym.  Have your children
explain these stations to you:

Recently, there have been lots of critters visiting us:

In First Grade Drumlin Farm brought a Ground Hog and a Hawk to demonstrate an animal that hiberates, and one that migrates.  Here's a picture of the Ground Hog.  Do you think he will see his shadow on Saturday?

Here is Bill Money of Natural Discoveries showing the Kindergarten class a lizard...

In Kindergarten they have been learning about dinosaurs and fossils.  Did you know that dinosaurs are more closely related to birds than lizards?  And that dinosaurs ate roaches!

... and a very big roach!

After all,

it is

January in New England!

And, occasionally we have a SNOW DAY!!!

What a good sport...
Ms. Driscoll, guilty as charged.

Shown here behind bars for a good cause.
Thank you for your contributions to the
Muscular Dystrophy Association
which helped bail out our fine, law abiding Principal!

Don't forget those boots,
coats, hats, snow pants and mittens!
It's Wintertime!
Library receives new reading terrace thanks to a generous donation from the PTF.

Thank you Mr. Follett for assembling the unit!

The Annual Boxborough Senior Breakfast went on despite the threat of heavy snow for later in the day.

The Breakfast, put on by the
6th graders, was a feast.   Everyone who attended had a great time and left extremely satisfied.

6th Grade was creating 3D Maps
of Egypt and the Nile

Mr. Beane visited several classes during the day and spoke about how important a good education is when it comes to achieving your goals later in life.  Your education along with your determination to succeed will help you get through any trials you may encounter along the road.

On November 8th there was a familiar voice heard around Blanchard.  Anyone who had attended a Red Sox game would surely have recognized the voice of Mr. Carl Beane, the Red Sox Announcer.

Mr. Beane's visit was arranged by
Mrs. Rakauskas, a Blanchard Parent

Mr. Beane continued his inspirational message during Community Meeting and then followed it up by sharing much of his sports collection with the students of Blanchard.  Here is Mr. Follett taking a swing with one of Carl Yastrzemski's bats.

At the Community Meeting on October 25th the 5th graders shared an Acrostic Math Poem
that spelled out the following:

In Late September:

The Boxborough Garden Club
hard at work getting the
ground around our sign ready
for a new garden

Thank you goes to both the Boxborough Garden Club and to the 8th Grade Green Team at RJ Grey Junior High for creating a beautiful garden around our sign!

September 26th

In honor of Johnny Appleseed's Birthday, Johnny (Dr. Bates) gave apples to all students as they arrived this morning.  The apples were donated by Chuck Lord from Carver Hill Orchard in Stow.  Later, Johnny read his story to the students.
